The Stellenbosch Civil Advocacy Network (SCAN)
Working Group Description
The Food System Working Group brings together learning institutions, businesses and NGOs in the Stellenbosch food system. We aim to address the question – “How do we move from local food relief to sustainable food security in Stellenbosch?”
Focus areas
- Partnering with Stellenbosch University Agri Sciences to provide Social Impact-capacity support for agricultural initiatives
- Facilitating collaboration between educational institutions and the Agricultural sector to bridge the gap between education/training and industry needs
- Supporting the development of the Stellenbosch Agrihub, particularly through the Lynedoch Co-op, to strengthen local food systems
- Identifying short-term job opportunities through the IDC project to address immediate needs and stimulate economic growth
Development Gaps
- Further development and implementation of initiatives in 2023 with Stellenbosch Food Actors and other relevant stakeholders to address ongoing challenges and opportunities in food security
Collaboration Opportunities
- Addressing the needs of small-scale growers, initiatives, and emerging farmers to enhance food security at the grassroots level
- Providing training and capacity support to empower individuals and communities involved in food production and distribution
- Promoting Food System Innovation to address challenges and create sustainable solutions for food security
